The Carver Class of ’65 is an alumni organization consisting of members of the graduating class of George Washington Carver High School, 1591 Pennsylvania Street, Memphis, Tennessee 38109.

 

The mission of this organization is to promote interest in academics, athletics, and the arts at George Washington Carver High School, now operating as George Washington Carver College and Career Academy, foster fellowship among alumni, and support social and charitable activities of the school and community.

 

We strive to promote excellence for our class and alma mater by nurturing productive relationships, providing service and support, and serving as an advocate for our members, the school and the Carver community.

 

We do this by ~

 

  • Maintaining contact with the Carver Class of ’65 alumni, other groups and organizations interested in the future of the school

  • Promoting class reunions, trips, and other social events to foster lifelong connections that strengthen the relationship between class members, alumni, parents, families, and friends

  • Providing grants to support the school and scholarships for its college-bound students

  • Their degree of participation in alumni and school-sponsored activities

  • Their volunteer efforts on behalf of the school and the community

  • Their advice, counsel and financial contributions to the class and to our alma mater.

Membership

 

Any graduate member of the George Washington Carver High School Class of ’65 (with one exception) shall become an active member upon payment of annual dues.  An individual whose dues are current is considered an “active” member; an individual whose dues are not current for the year is classified as an “inactive” member.

 

Dues

 

The members shall each pay annual dues, as determined by the membership, and collected no later than forty-five days into the new fiscal year.

 

Fiscal Year

 

The fiscal year of the organization shall be from January 1st through December 31st of each year.

 

Officers

 

The organization shall have the following officers, whose powers and duties shall be as provided by these Guiding Principles: President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and Comptroller, and hereafter referred to as the Executive Committee.

 

Duties of the Executive Committee

 

President

 

The President shall preside at all meetings and shall perform all other duties usually pertaining to that office.

 

Vice President

 

The Vice President shall act as an aide to the President and shall perform all the duties of the President in the absence of that officer in case of incapacity to perform the duties of this office, until such time as the President can resume normal duties.  In the event of a vacancy to the President’s office, the Vice President will assume the office of President.

 

Secretary and Assistant Secretary

 

The Secretary shall keep the minutes and a current record of all meetings of the organization, shall give the notice of the place and time of the monthly meetings and any Special meetings required to be given and shall perform such duties as may be delegated by the President.

 

Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer

 

The Treasurer shall receive all money and effects of the organization; shall keep an accurate record of receipts and disbursements, and shall pay all bills and accounts as authorized by the President.  The Treasurer shall present a report at each monthly meeting of the organization and at other times as appropriate. In December of each year, the Treasurer shall present an end-of-the-year financial report and submit a proposed budget for the next fiscal year to the active membership.

 

Comptroller

 

The Comptroller shall examine and audit the accounts of the Treasurer at such time or times as may be desired by the active membership and shall make a full written report on the financial condition of the organization at the November meeting and at such other times as he/she may deem appropriate.

 

Term of Office

 

The term of office of each member of the Executive Committee shall be two years. The term of office shall commence January 1st following the elections and end December 31st of the next year.  No officer shall continue after two consecutive terms, unless so decided by a unanimous vote of the active membership.

 

Elections

 

Nominations shall be announced and officers shall be elected at the November meeting by a majority vote of the active members present at that meeting.  Secret written ballots shall be used if more than one candidate is running for the same office.  An individual must be an active member of the organization to be nominated.

 

Voting

 

Each active member shall be entitled to one vote at each meeting.  Active members may vote by proxy on any subject mentioned in the announcement convening the meeting with the exception of elections.

 

Meetings

 

There shall be a regular meeting on the second Monday of each month at such time and place as determined by the active membership.  In the event of inclement weather or holiday, the meeting will be held the following Monday. 

 

A quorum shall consist of nine active members including, at minimum, two members of the Executive Committee.  The President, or in his/her absence the Vice-President, shall preside at all meetings of the organization.

The President shall appoint the Chairperson of the following committees and positions, and other committees and positions as needed:

Amendments

 

These Guiding Principles may be amended by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of the active membership present and voting.
